

Sister Clarita Gietl O.S.U. died at the Ursuline Infirmary on Thursday, August 12, 2004. She was born April 24, 1912 in Springfield, Illinois, the daughter of Oscar and Susan Lofy Gietl. Her name prior to entering the Ursuline Order was Cecilia Magdalene. Sister Clarita began her training as an Ursuline at the Novitiate in Alton on July 1, 1930. She made her vows as an Ursuline Religious January 3, 1933. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from St. Louis University in 1952. During her many years in the educational ministry, Sister Clarita gave some 32 years of service in the Diocese of Springfield, teaching at Blessed Sacrament School, St. Aloysius School, St. Joseph’s School and Ursuline Academy in Springfield, Illinois, at St. Patrick’s in Alton, and at St. Bernard’s in Wood River. She also taught a SS Peter and Paul in Collinsville, and Ascension Parish School in Oak Park, Illinois. She had three assignments outside Illinois: Dallas, Texas, San Antonio, Texas, and Jennings, Missouri. Sr. Clarita retired from teaching in 1985 and came to the Queen of Peace Infirmary in Alton, Illinois in May of 2000 after suffering a stroke. She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Richard, John, Jerome and Paul. She is survived by two sisters, Lucy Nolan of Springfield, and Rosemary Foley of Decatur, and her Ursuline Sisters. Visitation will be from 9-10:45 a.m., Saturday, August 14, 2004 at Ursuline Convent Chapel, 1400 North 5th Street in Springfield. Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 14, 2004 at Ursulilne Convent Chapel, 1400 North 5th Street, Springfield with Reverend Robert Erickson CSV and Deacon Reverend Mr. Richard Gietl celebrants. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to: Ursuline Sisters of Springfield Retirement Fund, 1400 North 5th Street, Springfield, IL. 62702. The family and Ursuline Sisters are being served by Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield.
