

Sister Anne Simko died peacefully at the Ursuline Infirmary in Alton, Illinois on Saturday, March 26, 2005. She was born in Springfield, Illinois September 14, 1910, the daughter of Stephen and Mary Kafka Simko. Sister Anne entered the Ursuline Order on July 1, 1926 and made her first vows in 1929. She received both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from DePaul University in Chicago. During her many years of teaching she served at St. Joseph and Sacred Heart Parochial Schools in Granite City; at St. Joseph’s, Blessed Sacrament and St. Aloysius Schools in Springfield; at Ascension School in Oak Park; and at Ursuline Elementary School in Dallas, Texas. From 1942 to 1943 Sr. Anne taught in the Child Garden at Springfield College. In 1978 she graduated from the Area Capitol School of Practical Nursing and then joined the Ursuline Infirmary Staff in Alton. She returned to Springfield in 1979 where she did volunteer work in the SCI Library. From 1980 to 1988, Sr. Anne frequently gave Mission appeal talks all over the Midwest to aid the Ursuline Missions. She came to the Alton Ursuline Infirmary as a resident in 1994. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Mary McGrath, Kathryn Carey and Regina Disco and four brothers: Stephen, Andrew, John and Louis Simko. Sister Anne is survived by four brothers: Emory and James of Springfield, and Frank and Thomas of Galt, CA, as well as her Ursuline Sisters. Visitation will be held from 9:00 –10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at Ursuline Convent Chapel, 1400 N. 5th St. Springfield. The Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend James Simko, nephew of Sister Anne as celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Ursuline Infirmary, 845 Danforth St. Alton, IL 62002. The family and Ursuline Sisters of Sister Anne Simko, OSU are being served by Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield.
