
Sister M. Onesta Halama, 86, of the Hospital Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis died on Sunday, January 21, 2001 at 3:20 a.m. at St. John's Hospital, Springfield, Illinois. Sister M. Onesta, the former Emilie Halama, was born in Rutenan, Silesia, Germany on October 25, 1914, the daughter of Simeon and Elizabeth Ledwolorz Halama. She entered the Congregation on November 22, 1933 and professed her religious vows on October 4, 1936. Sister was a 1942 graduate of St. John's Hospital School of Nursing and a 1944 graduate of St. John's Hospital School of Anesthesia. She served the community as nurse anesthetist at hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin. She ministered at St. John's Hospital, Springfield, Illinois from 1956 until 1989. She retired from active duty in 1989. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Sister Onufria Halama, OSF in 1991. She is survived by several half-brothers and half-sisters; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews. Visitation will be held at the Motherhouse from 4-8 p.m. with a Wake Service at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, January 22, 2001. The Eucharistic Celebration and Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father John Ostdiek, OFM on Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church at the Motherhouse. Burial will be in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery. The family of Sister M. Onesta Halama, OSF and her Franciscan sisters are being served by Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.
