Sr. Mary Jo Schulte, O.S.F.

Sister Mary Jo Schulte, O.S.F., 77, of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis died on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 5:20 p.m. at St. Francis Convent, Springfield, Illinois. Sister Mary Jo Schulte was born in Quincy, Illinois on April 25, 1940, the daughter of Frank and Frances Wilde Schulte. She entered the Congregation on September 12, 1958 and professed her religious vows on September 8, 1961. Sister received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Marillac College in 1966 and a Master of Science degree in Nursing from The Catholic University of America in 1972. She served as a nurse and clinical specialist in the Psychiatric Departments at HSHS hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin during the early years of her career. From 1981 to 1988, she served as Program Facilitator and Assistant Director at St. Johns School of Nursing, Springfield, Illinois. She served two terms as a Provincial Councilor for the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis from 1988 until 1995. In 1996 until 2004, Sister was a nurse counselor for the Intercongregational Collaboration Project in Dubuque, Iowa. She returned to the Motherhouse in Springfield, Illinois in 2004 and served in various volunteer ministries. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers: David F. Schulte, Stanley R. Schulte, and Frank N. Schulte. She is survived by her brothers, Mark (Judy) Schulte of Quincy, Illinois, Roger (Colleen) Schulte and Steve (Kathleen) Schulte of St. Peters, Missouri; a sister, Sister Rose Miriam Schulte, O.P. of Alton, Illinois; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and cousins, as well as her Franciscan Sisters with whom she shared her life for nearly 59 years. Visitation: 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at the St. Francis Convent with a Wake Service at 6:00 p.m. Eucharistic Celebration and Rite of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2017 in St. Clare of Assisi Adoration Chapel at St. Francis Convent with Father Dennis Koopman, O.F.M., celebrant. Burial will be in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery.
