He was born on January 20, 1954, in Davenport, IA, the son of William J. Jr. and Evelyn L. (Leeds) Corcoran. Steve married Pat Landers in Springfield on October 27, 1979.
Steve graduated from Davenport West High School with the class of 1972. He later went on to work with Chicago-based Consumers Sales and Marketing until his retirement. Once he retired, in a stroke of “Steve Genius”, he started The Golf Associates (TGA) golf apparel and equipment firm taking his love of golf and created a business around it. And if that wasn’t enough, he began managing properties around Springfield. Steve loved helping people and was always the first to say yes when someone needed something.
Their annual road trip to Montana was a highlight for Steve and Pat. Steve planned each trip with an eye out for beautiful Cathedrals to visit along their route while also searching for new paths to hike together upon their arrival. Steve found peace trekking through nature and the freshness of the crisp mountain air as he and Pat ascended the mountains. They always returned rested and looking forward to next year.
Steve, Pat, and Kelly spent many years in the competitive equestrian world. Kelly became a very accomplished rider taking them to countless arenas throughout the Midwest. Steve became a dedicated ‘horse dad’ driving hours while hauling a horse trailer and the tack and supplies Kelly and “Country Tunes/Willy” would need. This led them to several years of country living surrounded by acres of pastures, horses, barn cats, and more dogs.
Anyone who knew Steve for more than five minutes, realized how much he enjoyed playing golf and being outdoors, so much so, he would rather be behind a mower than sitting still inside somewhere. Other than how much he loved spending time with his family, Steve always found time for his friends.
In February 2006, Steve put together “The Corcoran Group”. Each year he and his golf buddies headed to Houston. This was a way to escape Illinois winter and play round after round of golf! Steve chose Houston after Hurricane Katrina disrupted their original plans, so High Meadows Ranch became the lucky recipient of this group of longtime friends for 20 years.
Steve was also a dedicated member of the Board of the Columbian Home Association (Knights of Columbus) from 2000-2009, where he and the other Board members worked tirelessly to provide oversight to Casey’s Pub and the pool complex that so many people have enjoyed for many years.
Steve was a people person first and foremost. He was quick to say hello, engaging in making everyone feel at ease and welcome. He had a devilishly smart and fun sense of humor that fit each person perfectly. God gave Steve that rare and special gift to know what to do and say to make someone feel seen, heard, and important. Everyone who knew him knows how lucky they are and will cherish his memory forever.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents; and his stepfather, Darrell Wilson.
Steve is survived by his wife, Pat; daughter, Kelly Corcoran of Springfield; Kelly’s partner, Will Anderson and his son, Luke; siblings, Colleen Bussen (John, deceased) of St. Peters, MO, Gary Corcoran of St. Charles, MO, Anne Corcoran of Springfield, IL, and Brian Corcoran of Springfield, IL; step-siblings, Daryl Lyn (Gary) Verstraete of Kansas City, MO, Jeff (Karin) Wilson of Durango, CO, Greg (Sheri) Wilson of Petersburg, IL, and Brian Mark (Theresa) Wilson of St. Louis, MO; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; many beloved dogs; and more friends than anyone can count.
