

Sumanta Mitra, MD, 79, of Springfield, passed away at 3:29 a.m. on Monday, November 27, 2017 at his residence. Sumanta was born on August 3, 1938 in Dacca, India, the son of Santi Lal Mitra and Chitra Bose. He married Lynn Collins in 1970 in Cleveland, OH. Sumanta earned his medical degree at the University of Calcutta College of Medicine. He was a Clinical Professor of Medicine and Chief of Nephrology at SIU School of Medicine, as well as the Director of the Kidney and Dialysis Center at Memorial Medical Center until his retirement 9 years ago. Sumanta was a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians. He was past president of the Sangamon County Medical Association, past president of the Springfield Indian Association, and member and past president of UCMAA. He enjoyed soccer, the stock market, politics, gardening, and was an avid photographer. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. He is survived by his wife, Lynn Mitra of Springfield; four children, Rob (wife, Tali) Mitra of Fenton, MO, Ron (wife, Tracy) Mitra of Darien, IL, Raj (wife, Jackie) Mitra of Springfield, IL, and Debi (Bart Chmielecki) Mitra of Chicago; nine grandchildren, Andrew, Nikhil, Jonathan, Zakhi, Samhi, Ryan, Julia, Naya, and Luke Mitra; four brothers; two sisters; and eight nieces and nephews. Celebration of Life and Visitation: 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 1, 2017 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center following the ceremonies and visitation.
