

Sylvan (Pete) Kapusta, son of Peter and Magdalene (Koniak) Kapusta, died on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at 5:55 a.m. He was born in Benld, Illinois on November 22, 1925 and married Anne Lee on February 5, 1966 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, Illinois, with Bishop William A. O'Connor officiating.
He served 2 years with the Counter Intelligence Corps in the United States Army and was a graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He was employed with the Illinois Department of Transportation for 35 years, retiring in 1991. Following retirement, he worked as a consultant for engineering companies, including Vasconcelles Engineering, R.C. Engineers, Martin Engineering, and Lin Engineering Company as an Engineering Technician for 15 years. He was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus Council 4175. He also volunteered part-time delivering meals to the elderly with the Red Cross and Daily Bread. Among his hobbies were bowling (which he enjoyed immensely), pitching horseshoes, building and flying model airplanes, woodworking, and carpentry.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Kapusta; son, Michael Kapusta of Springfield, IL; daughters, Maureen Wangard (Chris) of St. Louis, Missouri and Megan Kapusta of Springfield; sisters, Genevieve Ozanic of Mt. Olive, Illinois and Sr. Stephanie of Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield, Illinois; granddaughters, Clare, Margaret, and Sarah Wangard of St. Louis, and Leanne Kapusta of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sr. Bernardine; his brother-in-law, Joseph Ozanic; and numerous cousins, uncles, and aunts.
Visitation and Funeral Mass: Family will receive friends from 9:00-10:15 a.m. on Friday, October 2, 2015 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2000 Sangamon Ave., Springfield. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Donald Patrick Gibbons celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
