

Theodore J. Smith, 89, of Springfield, died at 8:15 a.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at his home. Theodore was born April 3, 1925 in Springfield, the son of Theodore C. and Ethel I. Newberry Smith. He married Betty Marie Peontek on June 1, 1946 in Springfield; she preceded him in death on February 8, 2013. Theodore attended Springfield High School and proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. He was employed as a carpenter with the Carpenters Union and was a member of the Carpenters Union for 65 + years. He was also a member of Sangamon County Genealogy for 27 years. He enjoyed woodworking and was very passionate about the WWII Memorial. He is survived by his five children, Drena J. (husband, Terry) Stickel of Springfield, Theodore John Smith (wife, Jean Ryan) of Springfield, Timothy R. (wife, Debbie) Smith of Jacksonville, Kenneth L. (wife, Lisa) Smith of Springfield, and Melinda S. Smith of Laguna Niguel, CA; one sister, Frances Nash of Horner, WV; eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 6, 2015 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
