

He was born on September 3, 1939, in Springfield, IL, the son of Francis P. and Pauline M. (Perry) Conway. Thomas married Mary K. Atteberry on January 6, 1962, in Springfield. She preceded him in death on September 18, 2023.
Thomas attended Cathedral High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Thomas went on to work as a superintendent of the Springfield Metro Sanitary District, retiring after 37 years of service. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and Knights of Columbus. He was awarded the Irishman of the Year in 1993 by the Springfield Sons and Daughters of Erin. Thomas volunteered for years at St. Martin De Porres, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Springfield Ethnic Festival, and the Springfield breadline. Thomas was known for spending time with friends, his love of family, cheering for Notre Dame football, and he also enjoyed working out at the YMCA, hunting, fishing, and golfing. He was respected by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary, and his brothers and sisters Bill Brennan, Ellen Coleman, Paul Brennan, Francis P. Conway, Jr., Janie Lokaitis, Donna Hickerson, Joseph Conway, and Casey Hagerman.
Thomas is survived by his sons, Thomas (Mary) Conway, Jr. of Springfield and Terence Conway of Charleston, SC; grandchildren, Jaclyn, Bridget, Nicole, Emily Sewall (Sam) and Molly Conway, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 30, 2025, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 524 E. Lawrence Ave., Springfield, with Fr. Daniel McGrath, celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, with military honors provided.
