

Velma L. Kelley, 96, of Springfield, died at 9:40 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, 2012 at Memorial Medical Center. Velma was born September 30, 1915 in Blackburn, OK, the daughter of James and Ida Jones Hopkins. She married George L. Kelley; he preceded her in death in 1983. Velma was a graduate of Hominy High School and Hills Business College in Oklahoma City, OK. She was the owner and operator of Poplars Restaurant and Motel on Peoria road from 1948-1983. She was also a secretary and bookkeeper for Capitol Supply Company from 1985-2002, when she retired. Velma was a member of Sherman United Methodist Church for over 50 years, a member of United Methodist Women and held various offices at the church. She enjoyed sewing, flower gardening, traveling, and enjoyed cooking and trying out new recipes, Tuesday night dinners with her family, and watching movies. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Connie Cleary; two brothers, Richard and James Hopkins; and two sisters, Pearl Ahrenkiel and Opal Custer. She is survived by one grandchild, Sam (wife, Cathy) Wilkerson of Springfield; great-grandchildren, Cassidy Jo Dodd and Samantha Williams; two great-great-grandchildren, Rylee Paige Dodd and Brayden Whittington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center. Memorial Ceremony: 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Sherman United Methodist Church, 2336 E. Andrew Rd., Sherman, IL, with Rev.
