

Velma Elaine (Sharrow) Rodgers, age 99 (99.97 to be exact), of Springfield was called home on January 29, 2014. She was preceded by her parents, Roy & Beulah (Curless) Sharrow, sister Florine (Sharrow) Nelson, brother Hubert Sharrow, husband Rev Austin A Rodgers, three stepsons (Franklin, Kenneth & Herbert Rodgers), and one grandson.
Velma leaves behind two stepchildren, Lydia (Rodgers) Gallup and Gerald Rodgers (Wife Clara) and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and nieces & nephews.
Born on February 10, 1914 in Adams County, Illinois, Velma went to college at Western Illinois University where she received a degree in education. She went on to get her master’s degree in education at the University of Colorado. She taught for many years at Stuart, West Grand Elementary & Butler Schools for district 186 and retired in 1977. She was an active member of the local chapter of retired teachers, Kings Daughter, Daughters of American Revolution, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Daughters of War of 1812 (Kickapoo Chapter) and Daughters of 17th Century as well as a member of Kumler United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be held at Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel on Sunday, February 2 at 1pm with the funeral services to be held immediately afterwards at 3pm. Burial will be at Ebenezer Cemetery near Golden, IL on Monday, February 3 at 11am. In lieu of sending flowers to the funeral home, please make a memorial donation to Kumler United Methodist Church, 600 North 5th, Springfield, IL 62702.
