
Vern Wade Nelson, 83 of Sherman, formerly from Rantoul, died at 11:33 a.m. Wednesday, December 13, 2000 at St John's Hospital. He was born April 17, 1917 in Carmi, the son of George Washington and Effie Blanche Hayney Nelson. He later married Eleanor K. Creamer at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Decatur May 1948. She preceded him in death. Mr. Nelson served with the Office of Strategic Services in China and India during WWII. He also served in Korea, Spain and with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Forces in France. He was an instructor for the Jet Engine Mechanic Course in the United States Air Force. Mr. Nelson was also Commander of the Rantoul American Legion Post 287 in 1974. Vern is preceded in death by his wife, his parents and a sister: Virginia L. Vieira. He is survived by a daughter: Patricia K. (husband, Patrick) Tyson of Sherman; two brothers: Robert Nelson of Springfield and George Nelson of Carmi; three grandchildren: Timothy Wade Tyson of Forest Park, Shaun Patrick Tyson of Sherman, Leah Kathleen Tyson of Sherman and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home from 8:30-9:00 a.m. on Friday, December 15, 2000, where funeral services will follow with Reverend Ralph J. Zetzl O.F.M. officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
