Vincenzo Giannone

Vincenzo “Vince” Giannone, 78, of Springfield died at 1:40 a.m., Thursday, November 3, 2005 at St. John’s Hospice. Vince was born October 20, 1927 in Springfield, IL the son of Leo and Grace Louise Zummo Giannone. He married Jeannette Darrigo on May 24, 1978 in Springfield, IL. Mr Giannone was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WWII, the Korean War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He retired in 1971 after 26 ½ years of service to his country during which he received the following medals: United States - Fidelity Zeal Obedience; American Campaign - United States of America 1941-1945; Asiatic Pacific Campaign (2 Stars) - United States of America 1941-1945; World War II - Freedom From Fear And Want - Freedom of Speech And Religion - United States of America 1941-1945; Occupation Service - United States Navy- For Service; China Defense - United States Navy- For Service; National Defense; Korean Service - United States of America; Korea (2 Stars) - For Service in Defense of the Principles of the Charter of the United Nations. He was also on board the USS Missouri in 1945 during the signing of the Peace Treaty that ended WWII. Vincent was then employed as a carpenter for Capitol Woodwork for 18 years retiring in 1989. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother: Frank Giannone. He is survived by wife: Jeannette Giannone of Springfield; two brothers: Simone Giannone of Springfield and Leonard (wife, Luanne) Giannone of Florida; one sister: Mary (husband, Robert) Reed of Springfield and several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday, November 7, 2005 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 8, 2005 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 245 N. Amos Ave., Springfield, IL with Rev. Robert J. Jallas celebrant and Rev. Philip Kraft concelebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Navy Military Honor Guard will conduct military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, 875 N. Randolph St., Suite 225, Arlington, VA 22203-1977.
