

She was born in Jacksonville, IL, on July 10, 1927, the daughter of Claud and Pauline (Hankins) Sumpter. She married Robert McDonald, and he preceded her in death May 7, 2016. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, her son, James Greenleaf, a grandson, Jesse Greenleaf and her brother, Bill Sumpter, stepson, Roy McDonald and stepdaughter, Ann Otten.
Virginia was described as a progressive woman. Full of energy and determination, she completed her training and obtained a pilot’s license at a young age and then later achieved her qualifications for an associates degree from Lincoln Land Community College in her forties while working full time. At age 90, she attended the Air Show at Springfield Capital Airport and went up in one of the W.W. II era planes.
She was a member of West Side Christian Church. Proud of her heritage, she was both a member of the Daughter’s of the Civil War and Daughter’s of the American Revolution. Virginia and Bob were known for their expertise and collection of antiques. She was a volunteer tour guide at the Dana Thomas House and the Governor’s Mansion.
Virginia retired in 1991 from the State of Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs where she served as an Audit Manager.
She is survived by her two sons; Mark Greenleaf of Springfield and Gregg (wife Laura) Greenleaf of Franklin, IL, her grandchildren: Shila (Jeff) Stout, Shawna (Joe) Batty, Destiny (Jason) Ripp, Dillon Greenleaf, Kaylee and Sarah, several great grandchildren and her sister, Sherry Elmore of Murrayville, IL. Also surviving are her step-children: Donald, Robert Jr., Mark, Patrick, Charles McDonald and Teresa Flesch.
Arrangements are in the care of Bisch Funeral Home West 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd. Springfield, IL where family and friends are invited to a time of visitation on Friday, Nov. 14, 2025, from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. A graveside service will follow at 12:30 pm in the Winchester Cemetery, Winchester, IL. Pastor Cindy Lash will officiate.
