

Virginia “June” Powell, 59, of Pleasant Plains, died at 5:34 a.m. Friday, December 24, 2004 at St. John’s Hospital Hospice. Virginia was born June 25, 1945 in Springfield, the daughter of Wendell O. and Thelma L. Douthit Smith. She married James K. Powell, Jr. on November 10, 1962 in Springfield. Mrs. Powell attended Springfield schools and Capital Area Career Center and Practical Nurses Program. She was a past member of the American Business Women of America and a member of St. John’s Hospital Samaritans. She retired in October 2002 from the Holiday Inn/Crowne Plaza where she had been employed for thirteen years as a reservationist. She was preceded in death by her mother: Thelma L. Smith and sister: Tammy A. Scroggins and an infant sister and brother and two nephews. She is survived by her husband: James “Jim” K. Powell, Jr. of Pleasant Plains; daughter: Anita (husband, John) Priester of Springfield; two grandsons: Ian and Miles Priester at home; father: Wendell O. Smith of Springfield; sisters: Barbara (husband, Joe) Phillips of Chatham, Marilyn Jean Lehman of Springfield, Wendy Miller of Chatham, Donna (husband, Gary) Dunbar of Chatham, Elaine (husband, Larry) Cooper of Crawfordsville IN; brothers: Wayne (wife, Linda) of Chatham, Michael (wife, Sherrie) of Chatham, Phillip (wife, Sherrie) of Springfield and Steve (wife, Kim) Smith of Chatham and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends from 5-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 30, 2004 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, with Rev. Dan Seibert officiating. Burial will follow in Richland Baptist Church Cemetery in rural Pleasant Plains.
