

Walter Painter, 83, of Springfield, died at 9:15 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at St. Johns Hospital. Walter was born May 8, 1935 in Springfield, the son of Chester and Mary Ingram Painter. He married Shirley Ann Wright on July 3, 1954 at Third Presbyterian Church. Walter proudly served our country in the U.S. Army National Guard. He most recently worked as a custodian at St. Agnes School, and prior to that he worked as a plater for Kev-Brite, Park Sherman and Whistle Bottling Company. Walter loved playing golf, cards, and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Chester, Charles, Carl, Gary, Larry, and Roy; sister, Sharon; son-in-law, Thom Layden; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is survived by his wife, Shirley A. Painter of Springfield; sons, Larry Eugene (Mary Baptist) Painter of Panama City Beach, FL, and David Allen (Sharon) Painter of Springfield; daughters, Jennifer Lynn Layden of Collinsville and Elizabeth Betsy Jean (Gary) Patterson of Dawson; eight grandchildren, Stacy (Joel) Petry of Edwardsville, Nicole (Josh) Houser of Waverly, Amy (Sunil) Bansal of Des Moines, IA, Christopher (Brandy) Layden of Collinsville, Carol Painter of Springfield, Katy (Josh) West of Heyworth, Kyle Patterson of Dawson, and Ryan (fiance, Heather Dyer) Painter of St. Louis, MO; sixteen great-grandchildren, Morgan, Mackenzie, Melaina and Carson Petry, Carter, Jackson, and Bennett West, Nathaniel and Eathan Betrand, Avielle and Coralie Houser, Bradley Payne, Hunter Bedasi, and Meera, Priya, and Ravi Bansal; siblings, Harold (wife, Sarah) Painter of San Antonio, TX, L. Jean Poggemiller of Springfield, Gordon Painter of Carlsbad, NM, and Tom (wife, Nancy) Painter of Carlsbad, NM; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies. Memorial Ceremony and Memorial Gathering: 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th Street, Springfield with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating. A memorial gathering will follow until 7:00 p.m.
