Walter E. Gabehart Jr.

He was born in Springfield, March 30, 1932, the son of Walter E. and Virginia (Looker) Gabehart Sr. His parents preceded him in death.

Walter was a graduate of Western Military Academy in Alton IL Class of 1950 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in finance at the University of Illinois College of Commerce in 1955.

He married Carol A Ernst in the 1st Methodist Church Kansas, IL August 10, 1958, and she preceded him in death June 27, 2005.

Walter retired from the State of Illinois Department of Professional Regulation where he served in the Real Estate Enforcement Division, in 2005, after 37 years of dedicated service. In the 1960’s, Walt built homes in the Knox Knolls, Hanover Hills and Country Club Acres sub-divisions. He was the owner and operator of 51 rental apartments and condos in Springfield and Jacksonville, IL from 1976-2004.

Walt and Carol traveled extensively, including trips to all 50 States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, England, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Taiwan and Japan. In addition to his love for travel, he enjoyed model railroading. He built a large display in the basement of his home and enjoyed operating sessions with the members of the “Once A Month Club” for more than 20 years.

Walt is survived by his three children; Mark (Yolanda) Gabehart of Round Rock, TX, Scott (Miatra) Gabehart of Phoenix, AZ, and Polly (Michael) Schrader of Rochester, IL. He has six grandchildren: Gabriella Gabehart, Samantha (boyfriend Zack) Schrader, Shahab Mehraban, Cassandra (Matthew) Turnage, Megan (Adam) Matzat and Dylan (Kathy) Schrader, and two great grandchildren; MacKenzie and Maisie Matzat.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
