Walter J. Hoyt, Jr.

He was born on September 29, 1938, in Springfield, the son of Walter Sr. and Mary L. (Clanahan) Hoyt. Walter married Joan E. Ingram on September 8, 2004, in Springfield.

Walter graduated from Lanphier High School with the class of 1957, and later earned an associate’s degree. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Walter went on to work for Senior Services for six years in Springfield, Big R for 3-4 years as a sales associate in Springfield, and for the State of Illinois for 23 years in Logan County and Taylorville correctional facilities as a correctional sergeant. He was a faithful member of Atonement Lutheran Church (now Peace Lutheran Church – Springfield). Walter enjoyed woodworking, building cabinets, raising and breeding Great Danes, working with leather material to make items such as wallets and belts, and listening to country western music and Elvis Presley gospel songs. He had a great sense of humor, and was charismatic, outgoing, and helpful.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, James and Bobby Hoyt.

Walter is survived by his daughters, Alora (Rick) Brown, and Cindy Hoyt; son, Curtis Hoyt (companion, Michael Ruocco); step-daughters, Frances Ingram and Charlene Troxell Monts; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five step grandchildren and several step great-grandchildren; siblings, Marion Shaw and Harry Hoyt; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield.

Funeral Ceremony: 11:30 a.m. on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, with Chaplain Nick Butcher officiating.

Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center, following services.

A Graveside Ceremony will be held at Rosehill Cemetery in Petersburg at a later date, where military honors will be conducted by the Menard County Honor Guard and the United States Army Burial Detail.
