

Walter Barrett McDonald, 92, of Springfield, passed away at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Regency Care. Walter was born January 3, 1923 in Chicago, the son of Walter Killion and Anna Barrett McDonald. He married Evelyn Quigley, and they had six children. She preceded him in death. He then married Maggie Smith; she also preceded him in death. Walter proudly served his country in the United States Naval Air Corps. He had an accomplished career with Illinois Bell, from where he would retire. Walter was active in the YMCA where he was a Big Boss and nicknamed "Muscles McDonald." He was very athletic and enjoyed golf, racquetball, the outdoors, and volunteering for the American Cancer Society. He was also preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Raymond McDonald, Betty Ann Licktieg, and Eileen Alverson. He is survived by his daughters, Laurie (husband, Cress) Maddox, of Springfield, and Corinne "Corky" McDonald, of Santa Fe, NM; sons, John (wife, Becky), Tim, Dan (wife, Colleen) McDonald, all of Springfield and Tom McDonald of Chicago; twelve grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; Maggie Smith McDonald's sons, Russ Smith, of Los Angeles, CA and Mark Smith, of Springfield, IL; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield with Rev. Jeff Grant officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
