

Walter James Ushman, 77, of Springfield, died at 1:20 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at St. John's Hospice. Walter was born August 12, 1932 in Springfield, the son of Vincent and Agnes Casper Ushman. His parents preceded him in death. He married Betty J. Fulton in 1957, they later divorced. Walter graduated from Feitshans High School in 1951. He was a three year letter winner for baseball and basketball while at Feitshans. Walter was a Veteran of the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. After returning from the Army, he attended carpentry school Union #16 and began working as a union carpenter for Kensil & Ushman Builders. He later retired from CWLP where he also worked as a carpenter. He loved woodworking and playing baseball and basketball in high school. He is also preceded in death by two brothers, William Ushman and Robert Ushman. He is survived by five daughters, Ann (husband, Jim) Law of Auburn, Susan Ushman of Springfield, Mary (husband, Eric) Schwarz of Springfield, Pam (husband, Daniel) Kearney of Marietta, GA and Michelle (husband, Steven) Viehmeyer of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a few nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center. Family will receive friends from 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. on Friday, October 9, 2009 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. A memorial ceremony will follow at 1:00 pm. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Hospital Hospice Program, 800 E. Carpenter, Springfield, IL 62769.
