

He was born on February 12, 1937, in Springfield, IL, the son of Joseph and Della (Walutkevicz) Shures. William married Marilyn “Kay” Harris on September 17, 1960. She preceded him in death, on August 28, 2002.
William graduated from Cathedral High School in 1955. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. William went on to work as an autobody repairman. He was a member of Beekeepers Association, Knights of Columbus, and Fruit Dabblers. William enjoyed wood crafting, collecting all kinds of items, fishing, radio control, auctions/flea markets, and was a beekeeper for decades.
He was also preceded in death by his parents.
William is survived by his sons, William (Renita) Jr. and James B. (Janet) Shures, both of Springfield, and Wayne A. (Tammy) Shures of Rochester; daughter, Therese K. (Rich) Ballweg of Springfield; grandchildren, Brandi, Joseph, Kelsey, Jennifer, Tyler, Madalynn, Brandon, Haley, Jeremy, Rachel, Heather, Ryan, Scott, and Kyle; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Della (George) Laurenzana and Barbara Shures, both of Springfield, and Michael Shures of Fancy Prairie; and companion Rita Sloan; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at Sacred Heart Church, 722 S. 12th St., Springfield, with Fr. Brendan Gibson, celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, with military honors provided.
