William D. Stokes, Sr.

William D. Stokes, Sr., 80 of Springfield, died at 1:24 p.m. Thursday, June 24, 2004 at St. John’s Hospital. William was born July 10, 1923 in Hillsboro, IL the son of Clifford Emmett and Marie Frances Lucas Stokes. He married Doris Godown September 1, 1949 in Hillsboro; she preceded him in death December 2, 2003. Mr. Stokes was a self-employed painter and later in life he worked for the Post Office and for Horace Mann Insurance Company. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during WWII and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Disabled American Veterans (DAV). He was also preceded in death by his parents, daughter: Donna and two brothers: James Alford and Clifford Stokes. He is survived by two sons: William D. (wife, Shirley) Stokes of Sun City, AZ, Donald (fiance, Amanda Lufkin) Stokes, Springfield; five daughters: Pamela (husband, Paul) Wells of Spaulding, Mary Lou Henry of Mesa, AZ, Cynthia Bonner of Springfield, Kelly (husband, James) McCann of Springfield, Tamara (husband, Terry) Veith-Hess of Springfield; sixteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three sisters: Mary Kathrin Frarer of Hillsboro, Helen Ann Stokes of Springfield, Patsy May Wright of Marseline, MO; one brother: Maynard L. 'Bob' Stokes of CA and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation was accorded by The Cremation Tribute Center. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 28, 2004 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield with Rev. Msgr. John R. Ossola officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.
