

Born Sept. 25, 1921 at Dormy Nook, her family home in the Catskills Mountain, Round Top, New York to Harry Douglas Wain who proceeded her in death in 1924 and to Mabel Swift LaRue who proceeded her in death in 1985.
In 1929, Winifred sailed to England on the Aquitania to live with her grandparents at The Grange, in Ripley, Derbyshire.
Winifred graduated from the Calder Girls School in Cumberland, the Children's Hospital in Derby and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham as a nurse. It was at the QE that she met Dr. Floyd Barringer who went there as a volunteer for medical services with Doctors For Britain to help in the war effort.
Winifred and Floyd married June 2 1945 in Ripley and returned to America April 6, 1946. In 1950, they moved to a farm west of Springfield which they named Thirkelow Meadows after Winifred's ancestral home in England from the 1600s.
Survived by children Judith Wain (Richard Kerhlikar), Daniel Monroe, David Malcolm, Douglas McDowell (Pamela Broughton) and grandchildren, Emily, Justin, Andrew, Alexandria, Abigail and Mark Nickum.
Over her lifetime, Winifred was active in the Sangamon County Medical Auxiliary, Sangamon County Historical Society, Abraham Lincoln Association, Springfield Civic Garden Club, Springfield Art Association, Kings Daughters 's Home, and Westminster Presbyterian Church.
She was an avid collector of English and early American antiques. From 1968 to 1983, Winifred and Floyd owned the Elijah Iles house, Springfield's oldest home, and had it placed on the National Register of Historic Places, which preserved the house for future restoration. Her mid 1800s American furniture, glass and pottery collection is currently on display at the Elijah Iles House. In the late 60's, Floyd and she restored the Freeman Hughes House on the corner of Monroe and Walnut and opened it as a museum highlighting middle class life in the 1870's.

Visitation will be Monday, Feb. 25 from 4 to 7 PM at Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 10 AM at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Dr. Lonnie Lee officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
