I first met Ben (W4KSY) via amateur radio back in 2003. He became a friend I never actually met. However, I felt that I knew Ben well. A fine man, who - on the air - qualified perfectly to be a â€œfriendlyâ€ participant in this informal radio group. It was called the â€œFriendly 40â€. When my wife and I decided to retire, we both agreed that it was time to return to the South. Members of the â€œFriendly 40â€ helped us in deciding that North Carolina was where we wanted to go. We retired to a mountain home just outside of Hendersonville, NC. From Laurel Park, I continued the enjoyable and informative conversations with Ben and his amateur radio friends who joined in for afternoon chats. Ben's kind heart made him the keeper of feral cats that he cared for and often mentioned during our regular chats. One of his technical articles became quite popular in the world of amateur radio. It is still a classic article for those who enjoy regional radio contacts on the lower frequencies, but don't have the space required for full sized antennas. Ben's published article, "Love my Loop" (http://www.dxzone.com/cgi-bin/dir/jump2.cgi?ID=11223) became a popular article about building a small antenna for the 40-meter amateur radio band. That article is still a classic today. Ben was a greatly respected amateur radio operator (â€œHAMâ€) and a fine gentlemen. Andy Kilpatrick K4YKZ

We met Ben about 30 years ago in Kill Devil Hills NC, when he and cousin Florence vacationed at the Outer Banks Beach Club, and we looked forward to seeing his smiling face every year after that. He had such wonderful stories about his life adventures...from letting the air out of car tires to ride on the sand before the beach road was completed, to prospecting for gold in California. We also kept in touch by e-mail, exchanging photos and stories about life, pets and his children and grandchildren. He will be missed!.

I remember Ben Smith sitting in the basement, surrounded by his ham radio gear just shaking his head at all the craziness that Sherry's friends brought into that house.  He will be missed

Ben, may you rest in piece.  You will be remembered forever by your friends.  Linda, thank you for keeping those of us who talked daily with Ben on Echolink, of his condition during the last few months.  We will keep you and your family in our prayers.
