Carolyn was born in Yreka, California, to Brice Percival Martin and Elizabeth Frances Martin, and grew up on Table Rock Ranch near Mount Shasta on land which has been in the family since the 1850s. She graduated from Stanford University in 1954, majoring in Spanish, and spent a semester abroad in Spain. After graduation, she traveled to Washington DC to work briefly for CIA as a secretary before meeting her future husband, Dr. Cornelius Glen McWright, an FBI special agent. Carolyn and Glen were married for 49 years, until his death in 2006.
Carolyn was a devoted mother and grandmother, sharing her passion for books, classical music, museums, gardening, and baseball. She was a proud resident of North Springfield for over 60 years and delighted in taking walks in the neighborhood and striking up conversations with anyone she’d meet. She played tennis and practiced yoga into her last decade, and was an active member of the Episcopal Church, a Sunday school teacher, and church librarian for many years. Carolyn will be remembered for her joyful spirit, faithful service, and immense love for her family and friends.
Carolyn is survived by children Glen McWright (Laurie) and Marta Howerton (Phil); and grandchildren Lara Howerton, Ellen Howerton, Megan McWright, and Peter McWright. She was predeceased by a son, Michael McWright (LTC, US Army, retired).
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 10 am at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 4801 Ravensworth Rd, Annandale, VA 22003.
