

Charles K. Butler Sr., Charlie, died at home on January 20, 2015, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Ruth, six children, Donna Durkin (Pete Rawls), Charles Kelly Butler, Jr, Susan Perry (Chuck), Kimberly Slocum (Glen), Karen Russell (Jack) and Sandra Berg, ten grandchildren, Toni (Billy), Julie (Tracey), Robert, Jessica, Amanda, Allison, Lucas, Samuel, Carrly and Jillian. Four great-grandchildren, Brianna, Anthony, Isabelle and Piper. Also survived by his sister Arlene Martz (Rodney) and sisters-in-law Patricia Butler, Betty Violett and Brenda Carr and brother-in-law William Carr and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie and Liz and two brothers, Billy and Gene.
Charlie spent 20 years as a Firefighter with the D. C. Fire Department and was a Master Carpenter for over 50 years. While firefighting and carpentry were his passions in life, his greatest joy was his family. His love and respect for his wife Ruth was a beautiful thing that was apparent whether you’d known Ruth and Charlie for years or for a day. His love for his children was unwavering and the love and pride he felt for his grandchildren was immeasurable. Charlie had a great sense of humor. He loved to bowl and tell a story or two. He was a big fan of the Washington Nationals and enjoyed attending games, he loved his city. Charlie loved family vacations at the beach and in the mountains and cherished his time with all of his friends. He will be missed by so many.
A celebration of Charlie’s life will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at JW and Friends Restaurant located at 6531 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA.
