Chuck was born on December 26, 1931 in Bellflower, Illinois to William B. Woods and Beulah E. Woods.
After attending the University of Florida, Chuck enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and served during The Korean War, with most of that time on the heavy cruiser USS Des Moines. He was honorably discharged in 1954 with the rank of Yeoman First Class. He then continued to serve his country for almost another 30 years working for the U.S. Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer in locations as diverse as Dakar Senegal, Freetown Sierra Leone, Jerusalem, Phnom Penh Cambodia, Frankfurt and Bonn Germany, Taipei Taiwan, and La Paz Bolivia, where he met his wife of 45 years, Carole.
After retiring from the Foreign Service in 1983 Chuck and his family settled in Annandale Virginia. He worked for ManTech International until retiring full time in 2000, when he and his wife moved to Lake of the Woods in Locust Grove, Virginia. While living in Lake of the Woods, Chuck got to indulge himself in his passions of genealogy, gardening, and the U.S. Civil War. He was regular volunteer at the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park and also with the Friends of Wilderness Battlefield. Chuck and Carole also took advantage of their retirement to extensively travel the United States and to spend as much time as possible with their grandchildren.
A funeral is scheduled for 12:00 Noon on July 6, 2018 at Quantico National Cemetery. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Chuck’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Battlefield Trust at https://www.battlefields.org/give/donate-tribute.
