OBITUARY

Chris Eric Copenhaver

December 11, 1955March 31, 2021

Chris Copenhaver passed away peacefully on March 31, 2021. Originally from Glen Ellyn, IL, just west of Chicago, he was a graduate of Glenbard North High School, Valparaiso University, and the University of Chicago, where he earned Master’s Degrees in both Geography and Political Science. After attending graduate school, Chris moved to the Washington, DC area to work for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) as an intelligence officer and imagery analyst.

Throughout his career in the Department of Defense, Chris tackled some of the nation’s toughest issues, including: Soviet/Russian political analysis; combat and targeting support to operations in Libya, the Balkans, and Iraq, and; analysis of global underground facilities. After working for the DIA, NPIC, and NIMA/NGA, he ultimately transitioned to the newly formed DHS, serving as a senior program analyst, retiring in Spring 2019.

An active auto-racing enthusiast, and a collector of vintage Corvettes, Chris was an avid fan of football, hockey, baseball, and billiards, as well as a political junkie and close watcher of the news. A fluent speaker of German, Chris’ education and career led him to travel to over 15 countries, including West and East Germany, Russia, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Italy, France, and Denmark, to name a few.

Chris was a loving husband and father, survived by his children, brother, and other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Rd., Springfield, VA, 22151 on Friday, April 16 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Burial will be private.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Chris' passing. During our time at DIA in the 1990s, he skillfully and tirelessly toiled on priority problems that only a few will ever understand, and his contributions to our nation’s security will endure forever. He was a patriot. Godspeed, my friend, and thank you.

My friendship with Chris was born through our mutual love of classic Corvettes, car shows and auto racing. His sense of humor combined with his political insight was always a welcome addition to our Saturday morning Cars-&-Coffee cruze-ins. He will be missed by many. My condolences go out to the entire Copenhaver family. RIP my friend...

My deepest sympathy to the Copenhaver family. Chris was a true professional who was an absolute pleasure to serve with while on the DHS staff. He was the personal and professional benchmark for all within the Office of Facilities and Operational Support. Thanks for affording the DHS Family to be apart of your time with us.

I am so sorry to hear about Chris, we worked together for a number of years in DIA and later with NGA. He was a forthright man never afraid to tell you what he he was thinking and never afraid to tackle any job placed before him. He had a supper a sharp mind and a even sharper sense of humor. Rest in Peace brother.

Our deepest sympathy to the Copenhaver family. Though Barb worked with Chris at DIA and DHS, our fondest memories are of many, many practices, games, and tournaments with the Ice Dogs. Chris was always there, always cheering. He will be missed.

Chris

You are already missed. We always had the most interesting conversations from the targeting issue of the day to much wider ranging topics, and is course, updates to people we knew. Did understand why you abandoned ship to the newly created DHS, but always missed our fewer conversations. You are missed.
