Corene P. Danehower

Corene was born in New Brockton, Alabama, to Alfred Levin and Belle Sullivan Peacock on April 11, 1925. She went to school in New Brockton where she was Class President and Organizer throughout high school. She won the DAR Citizenship award and was Salutatorian her senior year. She married Justus (Dan) Wilburn Danehower on September 3, 1949, in New Brockton, Alabama. Working her way through college, she graduated from the University of Alabama in 1951 with a major in Home Economics. She taught several different grades and subjects, but spent most of her career teaching Kindergarten at North Springfield Elementary School in Springfield, VA. An active member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Springfield, VA, she enjoyed teaching Pre-School, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and participating in the United Methodist Women organization. She was an unusually enthusiastic Alabama and Washington football fan, assisting energetically from the sidelines.

Upon retirement, she busied herself crafting a legion of Christmas Carolers and made many heirloom handsewn items for grandchildren and friends. She was one of several volunteers working at what was then called Fairfax Hospital. She was also very involved in Community Bible Study International.

She moved to Greenspring Retirement Community around the time of her husband’s (Dan’s) passing and became fully involved in several clubs and service activities. She was a member of the New Resident Welcome Committee, played on a Wii bowling team, launched a “Sweet Home Alabama” group, volunteered for the on-campus Republican Party and led two bible study groups well into her 90’s in the comfort of her apartment. Corene had a zest for life and a spunky wit. She brought warmth and love to all who knew her. She will be dearly missed.

Corene was preceded in death by her husband, Justus (Dan) Wilburn Danehower.

Corene is survived by her children Deborah Vorhis (David Vorhis) and Timothy Alan Danehower (Joyce Danehower), 9 Grandchildren Jonathan Vorhis (Jennifer Probst), Michael Vorhis (Carey Vorhis), Christopher Vorhis (Ji Shi), Katherine Peacock Vorhis (Casey Barrett), Joshua Danehower, Joseph Danehower, Jamie Danehower, Jesse Danehower and Alina Danehower, and 8 Great-Grandchildren Lila Vorhis, Samuel Vorhis, Helena Vorhis, Emma Vorhis, Leo Vorhis, Grace Corene Vorhis, Nora Vorhis and Riley Peacock Barrett.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., December 18 at St. John’s United Methodist Church, Springfield VA. Arrangements are by Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, VA.
