Dollie Gertrude Hankinson

She married the love of her life, Gordon Lee Hankinson, on July 21, 1960.

For 13 years, Dollie took a Trailways bus to her government job in Washington, DC, where she served many roles, most memorably as an editor for the CIA. When her children were born, Dollie retired. Later, she did bookkeeping for the gymnastics club, and worked tirelessly to support her family’s passions, including driving her girls to and from all of their activities. Dollie loved children and provided childcare for her niece, neighbors, and grandchildren.

For more than fifty years, Dollie and Gordon devoted themselves to their church community at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Springfield, VA. Dollie was a member of the Altar guild and decorated St. John’s for many holidays and Sunday services.

An avid gardener, she enjoyed flower arranging and loved tending to her plants in the yard. Dollie enjoyed country music, from Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn to Alan Jackson and Dolly Parton. She also loved butterflies, and received many butterfly pins as gifts from loved ones, which she often wore to church.

Dollie is preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Hankinson; her parents, James Linwood and Minnie Gertrude Leonard; her sisters, Florence Kathaline Duncan, Jean Rosamond Leonard, Gloria Maxine Fitzwater, Helen Deloris Geris; her brother, Walter Linwood Leonard, and her step-son, Del Ray Hankinson.

Dollie will be missed by her sister, Doris Madaline Brenner; her daughters, Donna Young (Charles), Dayna Wells (William), and Diana McIntyre; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and her community.

Visitation will be held at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22151, US, on August 26, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

A Funeral Service will take place at St. John's United Methodist Church, 5312 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22151, US, on August 27, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.

A Committal Service will be held at Stonewall Memory Gardens, 12004 Lee Highway, Manassas, VA 20109, US, on August 27, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm.
