

Born in Irvington, NJ, on April 5, 1914, as the only child of the late Bertha and John Roach, Dorothy was a longtime resident of Irvington, North Caldwell, Roseland, and Bloomfield, NJ. Her retirement was spent in Flat Rock, NC and Bonita Springs, FL, and later in Fairfax, VA.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Essex County Penitentiary Warden Daniel Knowlton "Jack" Read in 1955 after 22 years of marriage. In 1966 she married Elections Commissioner Edward A. Downey, and was widowed for a second time in 2004.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia R. Daron, and son, Daniel K. Read, as well as four granddaughters (Cyndi, Melissa, Michele and Amy); four grandsons (Jack, Timmy, Kevin and John); and 14 great grandchildren (Stephanie, Johnny, Ryan, Scott, Dylan, Kassie, Will, Trevor, Grant, Dominick, Dalton, Parker, Alyce and Julia).
Funeral services will be held at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Fairfax on Saturday, July 9th at 10:30 am. Interment will follow at Fairfax Memorial Park.
