

Elizabeth Arlene Lilley Girod, 82, died January 31, 2016, at home in Springfield, VA. She was born in New Castle, PA, June 26, 1933, the youngest daughter of Floyd and Julia Lilley. A graduate of Redstone Twp. High in 1951 and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1954, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Catholic University, Washington, DC, in 1956.
Arlene’s nursing career began in 1955 and included: Brownsville Hospital, Uniontown School of Nursing, Sibley Memorial Hospital, Goldblatt and Ryan Pediatricians, Arlington County as a public health and school health nurse, Ask-A-Nurse, and Kaiser Permanente, retiring in 1997 after 42 years.
She volunteered regularly for medical clinics, health fairs, community support groups, schools, religious and charitable organizations, and received two Volunteer Service Awards from two U.S. Presidents. Arlene was also active in the Catholic Church serving as co-chairman for Catholic Family Movement, Eucharistic minister, and as a wedding coordinator.
She traveled extensively: 27 countries, including trips to visit family in Hawaii, a memorable trip with cousins to trace family history in Mikohaza, Hungary, and to the Vatican where she met Pope Saint John Paul II.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Edward K. Girod, children, Mary Girod (Richard Kanahele), Michael (Tina) Girod, and Matthew (Luciana) Girod, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, brother, William F. Lilley, sister-in-law, Jewel (Thomas) Stegner, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation/prayers will be Friday, February 12th, Demaine Funeral Home, Springfield, VA, from 2-4 and 6-8pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, February 13th, St. Bernadette’s Church, Springfield, VA, at 11:30am. Visitation/prayers will be Monday, February 15th, Skirpan Funeral Home, Uniontown, PA, from 10:30-noon, followed by interment, Lafayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill, PA, at 12:30pm.
