Evelyn Louise Horen Winkels was born April 27, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan to the union of Harold and Theresa (Miller) Horen. Evelyn passed from this life surrounded by family and friends in Alexandria, Virginia, on June 27, 2022, at age 77.
Evelyn graduated from Marygrove College in Detroit, Michigan, in 1967. For a time, she worked for John Hancock Insurance in Detroit, and after transferring to D.C. to continue working for them, she attended graduate school at Catholic University. It was there that she met the love of her life. Evelyn was united in marriage to Charles N. Winkels on October 21, 1972 at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church in Wheaton, Maryland. She received her MA in Library Science from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. following which she began her career as a reference librarian at Marymount University in Arlington. Moving to Fairfax, Evelyn enjoyed 30 years at the Fairfax County Public Libraries in Virginia, beginning as a branch manager and ending as the FCPL system's Human Resource Manager.
Evelyn loved dearly the cats who shared the home, and she loved her work. She enjoyed traveling by train with her husband, and reading. She had a sharp mind, a generous spirit, a radiant smile, and a joyful laugh. Evelyn was also a wonderful cook and a gracious hostess.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Theresa (Miller) Horen, her siblings James Horen, Patricia (Anthony) Mazaitis, and Robert Horen, and her nephew Kevin Mazaitis.
Left to treasure her memory are her loving husband, Charles, of almost 50 years, brother-in-law Anthony Mazaitis, nieces Anita Poore of South Carolina, Martha Sellers of Missouri, nephews Ken Horen of New Mexico, Brian Horen of Colorado, Matt Mazaitis and Keith Mazaitis of Michigan, Ralph (Sabra) Sellers of Missouri, William Sellers of Arkansas, and many dearly cherished friends.
