She received her Bachelors in Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1973 and her Master in Economics from West Virginia University in 1974. It was in West Virginia where she met Ed, and they married in 1977.
Gerry is preceded in death by her brother, John Bolitch, and her beloved husband of 44 years, Ed Hofler. She is survived by her daughters, Julie Penland (David) of Chantilly, VA, Kate Gilmore (Ross) of Midlothian, VA, and Jenny Friedman (Kirk) of Springfield, VA; She was the proud “Meemaw” to Claire, Noah, and Savannah Penland; Jack, Brooks, and Hadley Gilmore; and Cameran, Brooklyn, and Bode Friedman.
Gerry spent her career engaged in healthcare administration and education, most recently spending the last 25 years of her career with the Northern Virginia Community College focused on strengthening the health care workforce throughout the state.
Gerry took great pride in her role as mother, wife and grandmother. She was a lifelong caretaker, selflessly tending to her aging mother for many years while raising three daughters and working full time. She spent the final years of Ed’s life with him enjoying their favorite hobbies of swimming and walking at Burke Lake Park. Gerry was an avid swimmer and had a passion for teaching others this important life skill, especially her grandchildren. She loved spending time with her nine grandbabies- baking “Meemaw bread”, embarking on new sewing projects, playing in the pool, reading stories, and creating signature lullabies. She also loved her pets fiercely and each one of them held a special place in her heart over the years. Throughout her life, Gerry found her purpose and passion in caring for the people around her.
