Gordon Lee Hankinson

Gordon was born in Hawaii to Delray Miller Hankinson and Willie Charleston (Bartee) Hankinson on August 22, 1935. After graduating from Washington & Lee High School, Gordon served in the Coast Guard, stationed on a lighthouse, and was honorably discharged in 1962. He married the love of his life, Dollie Gertrude Leonard, on July 21, 1960.

Gordon was a licensed barber, a talented house painter, and made a mean banana pudding: skills that his family and friends put to good use over the years! He had a natural ability to connect with others and make them smile. His people skills were on full display during his 32-year career as a route salesman for Coca-Cola. After retirement, Gordon spent much of his time at Pinecrest Golf Course, where he loved to play with his family and friends (and even shot two holes-in-one!) When he wasn’t golfing, Gordon was an avid reader and gearhead. He always had a stack of books checked out from the library and enjoyed driving and maintaining vintage cars and motorcycles. Gordon was a man of many talents and interests, and enjoyed sharing funny stories with a big, warm smile.

For more than fifty years Gordon and Dollie devoted themselves to their church community at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Springfield, VA. He served the church as a beloved member, helping to organize the Ushers and serving on the Altar Guild.

Gordon is preceded in death by his parents, Delray and Willie Hankinson; and his brother, Don Hankinson.

Gordon will be missed by his beloved wife, Dollie; son, Del Ray Hankinson; daughters, Donna Young (Charles), Dayna Wells (William), and Diana McIntyre; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his community.

Visitation will be 12:00 – 2:00 pm, Thursday, May 8 at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Rd, Springfield, VA. Funeral services will be held 10:00 – 11:00 am, Friday, May 9 at St. John’s United Methodist Church with Pastor J.W. Park officiating, 5312 Backlick Rd, Springfield, VA.

Burial will follow at Stonewall Memory Gardens, 12004 Lee Hwy, Manassas, VA.
