Helen Francina McGuire

Helen was born on August 13, 1939, in Nyack, New York, to Mary and Jesse Heap. She was raised in Nyack and graduated from Nyack High School. Helen's love of the natural world drew her to the sciences. She earned a bachelor's degree in biology from the College of Mount St. Vincent in 1961. She went on to earn a master's degree in biology from the University of California, Los Angeles, where she studied genetic inheritance in fruit flies.

During her time at UCLA, Helen met Lieutenant Michael McGuire, an active-duty Naval Officer who was stationed nearby in Long Beach, CA. Mike saw in Helen a person of incredible intelligence, strength, and fortitude – a partner that he knew could manage the challenges of life as a Navy spouse. They were married in Irvington, New York, in 1964.

Michael's Navy career took the family around the world over the following years, with tours that included Hawaii, Greece, Italy, and England. Helen made a home for her family no matter where they lived and enthusiastically embraced each culture. She spoke passable marketplace Greek. She outran a rogue water buffalo in Italy while pushing her daughter in a stroller. She celebrated July 4th each year with her British neighbors, featuring fireworks and an American style barbecue. Helen brought a little bit of America to Europe and carried Europe back home with her when the family returned to America.

After the family moved back to Virginia, Helen settled into life in Springfield. She was a dedicated volunteer at church, in her children’s schools, and in the community swim team. Helen worked for Wahler & Wahler as a bookkeeper and tax preparer, specializing in tax returns. Her patience, sense of humor, and attention to detail made her a favorite among the firm’s clients.

Helen was known for her ability to handle crises (large or small), for her love of learning, and for her required reading.

When her kids were young, Helen was the unofficial neighborhood surgeon who cleaned and patched up more skinned knees and elbows than reliable records can count. Her surgery was open to all neighborhood kids, who each knew they could rely on her calm competence to fix any injury.

Helen loved learning and never stopped. She was a voracious reader who particularly enjoyed histories and biographies. Conversations with her almost always included ideas and historical context gleaned from her reading that illuminated the hidden features of current events. She gave her family and friends a unique gift by enabling them to see the world with greater insight.

In the course of her reading she was always thinking about others – to the point that knowing her meant receiving “required reading” from her. The mail would regularly deliver newspaper clippings, book reviews, and magazine articles highlighting ideas that she thought would be of interest to the recipient. The only fee for this service was a follow-up conversation about the topic of those readings. She was a patient and dedicated teacher who understood that required reading didn’t always get done on time, but she never forgot a topic.

Helen is survived by her siblings, MC Dillon, Jay Heap, and Bill Heap; her son, Brian McGuire; her daughters, Kathy Juster and Maura McGuire; daughter-in-law Nancy McGuire; sons-in-law Jim Juster and PJ Donnelly; and her 11 grandchildren: Charlie, Hayden, Thomas, Anne, Maggie, Molly, Brennan, Keegan, Cami, Grady, and Ryan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael McGuire, and her sister, Patty Simmons.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in her honor to an organization of the donor’s choice.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Saint Bernadette Catholic Church in Springfield, Virginia, on Monday, August 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., followed by inurnment at the National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico at 2:00 PM.
