Passed away Thursday, January 30, 2014 in Fairfax, Virginia. She is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Robert Parrott of Springfield; her daughter, Dr. Kathleen Parrott (David) of Blacksburg; her son Robert (Karen) of Manassas; her son Mark (Sheryl) of Los Angeles, California; her four grandchildren Leah, Ethan, Sara, and Sean; and numerous other beloved family members.
Iva was born in Boylston, New York, February 4, 1926 to the late Floyd and Mabel McDougal. She married Robert in 1946 and began the busy life of a Marine officer’s wife, moving all over the country and keeping the home fires burning while her husband served overseas on several combat tours. She had a well-deserved reputation as an outstanding cook and hostess, and was a busy volunteer for church and community groups. After Robert retired from the Marine Corps, Iva became his partner in their Fund Raising and Counseling Service which was committed to assisting church-related institutions, agencies, and congregations in directing campaigns for building programs. While she was always active in church and charitable activities, her passion was raising her family; nothing made her happier than having everyone around her dining room table for a holiday meal she had prepared herself.
Visiting hours will be Friday, February 7, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield. A service celebrating Iva’s life will be held Saturday, February 8, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 5800 Backlick Road, Springfield. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Robert E. & Iva M. Parrott Fund for Volunteer Education c/o National Lutheran Communities & Services, 2301 Research Blvd., Suite 310, Rockville, MD 20850. For inquiries, contact Demaine Funeral Home, 703-941-9428.
