

Col Varner graduated from Officer Candidate School in July, 1952, and was commissioned in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, where he served for over 20 years. He had assignments in Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Iran, and various posts in the United States.
His military decoration included the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the Army Commendation Ribbon with Cluster, plus various theater of operations decorations.
After leaving the military in 1971, Col. Varner joined the Financial Management Service of the Department of Treasury as a Project Manager.
He graduated from Reitz High School in Evansville, IN, and the University of Nebraska in at Omaha in Omaha, NE.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marilyn; sons: Keith and Shannon; daughters-in-law: Bonnie and Suzanne; and grandchildren: Meredith, Gregory, Griffin, Riley, and Cameron.
Services at Arlington National Cemetery to be held at a later date.
