

Janet Elizabeth Maurer of Springfield, Virginia died on Friday, August 9, 2013 at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her brothers William Edwards and Mason Edwards, and her parents Mason and Martha Edwards.
She graduated salutatorian from Nescopeck High School in Nescopeck, Pennsylvania in 1944 and complete her Registered Nurse training at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
She was a staff nurse at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital until joining the Air Force in 1953. After attending Flight Nurse training, she was assigned to an Air Evacuation squadron at Travis Air Force Base in California. This is where she met Calvin R. Maurer, and they were married on October 8, 1955. Janet accompanied her husband to various locations including Alabama, Okinawa, and the Washington, DC area.
Mrs. Maurer is survived by her husband of 57 years and their three children – Calvin Maurer, Jr. of San Jose, California; Elizabeth Berry and her husband Elwin of Auburn, Washington; Scott Maurer and his wife Nicki of Haymarket, Virginia; her grandson Adam Berry; and her sister Peggy Wylie and her husband Ken of Sterling, Colorado.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 18, 2013, from 4 – 7 p.m. at Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, Virginia. Funeral Services with military honors will be held Friday, November 1, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Ft. Myer Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery. The family of Janet Maurer has established a Memorial Fund to commemorate her time as a nurse and devotion to helping and nurturing others. A scholarship will be awarded annually to benefit a Thomas Jefferson University School of Nursing student.
