Jean Elizabeth Halliburton Silver Owl (25 yr) member of the National Press Club, died on November 30, 2011, at Greenspring Village in Springfield, VA, at the age of 95. After graduating as valedictorian of Hollywood High in Hollywood, California, Jean went on to Stanford University where she was the first woman editor of the Stanford Daily. Jean returned to Los Angeles where she married Dr. Arnold Stevens, was active in charitable organizations, joined the Association of Women in Communications, and was president of The Colleagues, where she originated the annual Colleagues Sale, a fund raiser featuring the gently used clothing of the rich and famous. Jean’s career was primarily in print journalism. As Lifestyles Editor of the Newport Ensign in Orange County, CA, she created “Harborlites”, the popular coverage of the Newport Beach social scene. Jean moved from Orange County, CA, to McLean, VA in 1981 where she enjoyed a second career as Vice President of Training for Color Me Beautiful, Inc, her daughter, Carole Jackson’s, company. A pioneer resident of Greenspring Village, she co-founded the paper, The Villager, the Genealogy Club and the Scholarship Fund. Never without a camera, Jean’s talent for photography, sculpture and art, leaves a legacy of tangible memories we treasure. Jean leaves behind a family who adored her. Smart and funny, she taught us so much and was a constant example of honesty, integrity, and treating people kindly. Jean set high standards of excellence for herself and others. She attracted talented people and then supported and promoted them, as her protégés will attest. Surviving her are a son, Arnold Stevens, Jr. of Toluca Lake, California; a daughter, Carole Stevens Jackson of McLean, Virginia; a daughter, Harleigh Stevens Halliburton of Los Angeles, California; 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Her memorial service will be held at Greenspring Village, 7470 Spring Village Dr., in Springfield, Saturday December 17, 2011 at 2:00 PM on the second floor of Rose Court in Renaissance Gardens. A second memorial will be held in Los Angeles in late January. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in her memory to the Scholarship Fund or Greenspring Hospice at the address above.
