

Born on September 2, 1943, in the vibrant neighborhood of the Bronx, New York, John was the cherished son of John and Thelma Dwyer, both of whom predeceased him. He was also preceded in death by his two sisters, Erin and Doreen and by his beloved son, JP.
John's life was a tapestry woven with rich experiences, love, and dedication. He was known for his fierce loyalty, his infectious sense of humor, and his positive outlook on life. A man of stories, he could captivate any audience with tales from his past, each story brimming with warmth and wit.
After graduating from high school in the Bronx, John pursued an associate's degree and remained a lifelong learner, continuously seeking knowledge through various courses and certifications. He proudly served his country in the US Navy from 1962 to 1966, aboard the USS Mitscher (DL-2), and continued his service in the Reserves.
John began his professional career as an Air Traffic Controller with the FAA and was a proud member of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO), a role he held until the nationwide strike in 1981. He believed in workers' rights and continued that fight as Executive Vice President of PATCO in his later years. Known for his dedication and commitment, John was well-respected among his peers.
A change in his career path led him to Alexandria, VA, where he opened a successful printing business, serving the community with warmth and integrity until his retirement in 2021. During his years in business, John developed lasting relationships with his customers and was a devoted member and steadfast supporter of the Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC) for many decades. John bult his reputation on hard work, integrity, and heartfelt passion for service. His loyalty was evident in his unflagging advocacy for democratic candidates, unions, and labor organizations, ensuring their voices were heard and respected. His warmth, kindness, bright wit, devotion and generosity earned him admiration, heartfelt gratitude, and a cherished place in the hearts of all who knew him.
Beyond his professional life, John was an active member of the Police Emerald Society for many years, a testament to his commitment to community and service. His favorite pastime, however, was the simple joy of being with people. John delighted in the company of friends and family, always ready to share a story or a laugh at a gathering.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Kathy, who stood by him through life's many adventures. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Jennie, JP, and Kelly. JP's memory remains strong within the family. Jennie and Kelly, along with their spouses Tim and Andrew, brought him immense pride and joy. His granddaughter, Addison, was the apple of his eye, and he cherished every moment spent with her. John is also survived by his brothers-in-law Gary and John, his sister-in-law Alison, and their families.
A celebration of John's life will take place on July 20, 2026, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Rd., Springfield, VA 22151. Burial will follow at Quantico on July 21 at 12:30 PM, where John will be laid to rest with the honor befitting his service and contribution to family and community.

John Dwyer will be remembered as a man who lived life with passion, loved deeply, and left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
