Jon "Phil" Philip Childress

Jon Philip Childress was born in Houston, Texas to Virgil and Doris Robinson Childress July 8th, 1936. He graduated from Lamar High School in Houston Texas before completing an Engineering degree at Princeton University and a Master’s degree from the University of Texas in mathematics.

He moved to the Washington, DC area in 1973 to work at the Department of Energy. He worked in the area of energy forecasting as a consultant for many years. He married Alice Hanselmann on March 23, 1990.

He is preceded in death by his parents Virgil and Doris Childress, his sister Carol Childress Turner and his grand-daughter Ester Ruby Childress. He is survived by his wife Alice Childress, his brother William Stephen Childress(Diana-wife), his son Gavin Warner Childress, daughter-in-law, Kathy A. Childress and 5 grandchildren. They are Miriam Conrad and her spouse Sean, James Childress, Josiah Childress, Asa Childress and Jemima Childress. He is also survived by 3 great grandchildren, Sophie, Ella and Joshua Conrad.

A memorial gathering will be held Saturday October 18, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Demaine Funeral Home 5308 Backlick Rd. Springfield, VA 22151. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Christ House Medical Shelter 1717 Columbia Rd. NW, Wash, DC 20009 or the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the caring staff Fairfax Hospital, Mt. Vernon Hospital and The Fairfax at Belvoir Woods. Also, many thanks to Dr. Anwar Din, Internist and Dr. Blen Girmay of Inova Medical House Calls. Phil was surrounded by private caregivers who treated him as family. They include but are not limited to Jose, JoEllen, Ali, Dr. Ali and Kwami.
