Joseph Darwin Johnson, a long-time resident of Springfield, Virginia, passed away on September 15, 2021 in Springfield. He was 90 years old. Joe was born in Keokuk, Iowa to Carl Clarence Johnson and his wife, Margaret Harriet Gibson on March 28, 1931. He graduated from Montrose High School in Montrose, Iowa. He married Bobbie Mae Denham on December 22, 1951, in Keokuk. Joe graduated from George Washington University. He worked as a budget analyst for the Department of Navy until his retirement in 1986. Joe was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the Army. He served as a volunteer firefighter for the Greater Springfield Volunteer Fire Department, Engine Company 422. He and his wife, Bobbie, were civic-minded and actively involved in organizations in Springfield and Fairfax County. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Edwin Carl Johnson, Ethel Leola Peterson, Paul Irvin Johnson, Leroy Charles Johnson, Louise Pauline Palmer, and Harry Leroy Johnson. Joe is survived by his two sons, Joseph Darwin Johnson II (Sarah) and Carl Denham Johnson (Cindy) as well as four grandsons, Joseph Darwin Johnson III, Paul Christian Johnson, Matthew David Johnson, and Timothy Eli Glenn Johnson, and one granddaughter, Rachel Annelise Silverstein. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on September 23 with Pastors Albert Triolo and Sarah Johnson officiating at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Springfield, VA. An interment ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a future date. Memorials may be given to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church or Zero-The End of Prostate Cancer, 515 King Street, Suite 420, Alexandria, VA 22314. The family of Joe wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Seema Sharma, Dr. Jeanny Aragon-Ching, Capital Caring Hospice, and Greenspring for the kindness and care that they provided for Dad.
