Of Annandale, on October 31, 2022 at the age of 91. Beloved wife of 42 years to the late Thomas Gordon Harris; mother of David (Micki), and Thomas (Tomilynn); grandmother of Carolyn (Tyler), Sydney, Shelby, and Katharine; and sister-in-law of Barbara Dunn. She was also preceded in passing by her parents, Guy Brown and Mary Umbarger Dunn; siblings Emily Jean Chapman, Guy Jr., Donald, Karl, David, and Ruth Carol. Katharine was born in Bland, VA. She graduated from Bland High School and Roanoke College. She married her dearest Thomas in 1959. She lived in the DC area for over 60 years. She retired from the Fairfax County School System after a long career as an elementary school teacher. She was a longtime member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Springfield where she volunteered in many capacities. After retirement, she volunteered at INOVA Fairfax Hospital’s Treasure Trove and worked part-time at her longtime primary care physician’s office. Katharine had a wide range of hobbies and interests. She loved to read, play bridge and hand and foot, have gatherings with her neighbors, play board games, do puzzles, participate in the Living History Society, swim, root on Virginia Tech sports teams, travel domestically and internationally, stay in touch with her nieces and nephews, and most of all – anything with her grandchildren. Friends welcome on Friday, November 18 from 6-8 pm at Demaine Funeral Home, Springfield. A service to celebrate Katharine’s life will be held on Saturday, November 19 beginning at 12 pm at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Springfield. The service will also be joinable via live stream at http://youtube.com/stmarks-elca. Interment with her husband to follow at National Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Katharine’s memory to the American Heart Association, www.heart.org.
