Katie was born on September 21, 1959 at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in Groton,
Connecticut where her father was stationed with the Navy. Katie was a vivacious and witty
woman with many talents and interests. She was an accomplished photographer who
recently collaborated with her daughter, Jennifer, on a family celebration picture book. She
also created many gorgeous knitted items that were gifted to lucky family and friends. Her
writing reflected her personality - the same sense of humor and insight shone through in her
correspondence and storytelling. Katie loved the three cats she adopted - “little furry balls of
love” - she called them; they led a very privileged existence. Gardening was a favorite
activity of hers, a passion she inherited from her mother. She worked as a Paralegal in the
Office of the General Counsel at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and considered her
co-workers a second family. They were fortunate to enjoy the many home-baked cookies
and cakes Katie brought in for office celebrations. Her office family was wonderfully
supportive over the many years they all worked together which she always valued.
Katie is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in law, Jennifer and Miguel Reyes of
Springfield, Virginia, her loving parents Bill and Marie Olson of Springfield, VA , her three
brothers Steven, Thomas and James Olson and her grandsons, Alberto, Michael and Victor
Reyes.
She will be remembered by family and friends at a memorial service and reception to be
held on Saturday, February 7th from 10 am - 12:30 pm at New Hope Church, located at 8905
Ox Road Lorton, VA 22079. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in
Katie’s honor to, petsbringjoy.org or fisherhouse.org.
