I worked with Kathy in Reston 1994 to 1995. She had the cube next to mine. She was fun to work with. Friendly. Beautifully turned out. Perhaps in another life she could have been famous on the screen, with her classic Nordic looks. Impeccably polite.  Always professional and good with her numbers, as we together plotted the progress of a new global telecom company. Generous with tasty morsels brought in to share.  I was sitting her at home in London, England, just wondering what Kathy might be done. What a shock I got. 

I just heard today of Kathy's passing in April.  We were long time friends since 10th grade. We were neighbors, sang in Girls Chorus in high school, went to Spain together, and much more. We stayed in touch all these years after I moved to Florida after our graduation. She was beautiful inside and out. One of the smartest woman I'd know with such a wit.  My heart is so heavy.  I thank God that she is in his loving care and at peace. 


It was a week ago today, on Good Friday, that I learned Kathy had died.  I was stunned.  Images and bits of conversation, starting from when I first met her in her radiant early twenties till when I last saw her, filled my mind.   

I remember her best in interactions when she felt the most relaxed and happy.   She loved animals and spent as much time as she could with them, caring for them, playing with them or just watching them.  And they responded to her.  All animals, but especially pets.  When my mom had become a widow, she began feeding a stray cat who would come up to her back deck, lonely and hungry.  Mom really liked the little cat but was afraid it might have fleas or diseases and wouldn't let it in the house.  It was Kathy who finally wooed the cat, caught it and took it to the vet's.  She brought it back to become my mother's most beloved pet.    

And Kathy loved being with children.  Like animals, children could sense her genuine warmth towards them, that she truly enjoyed their company.  When we would visit in Virginia, my daughter Rachel loved it when Aunt Kathy would come over.   She could tell Kathy truly enjoyed spending time with her, that it wasn't pretense.  Aunt Kathy could  make the most tedious (to Rachel) family get-togethers fun.

Farewell, dear Kathy.  May the stars guide you to your forever home.
