On Monday, October 19, 2015, Laureano Gomez died peacefully at his home in Alexandria, VA surrounded by his wife and three children after a long struggle with ALS. Dear husband for 48 years of Patricia, beloved father of Patty, Laura, and Larry, Jr., and devoted grandfather of Joe, Matthew, Amelie, Aidan, Nathaniel, and Kaio.
Laureano was born in Colombia in the "little village" of Magangue. He emigrated to Los Angeles, California in 1965 where he met the love of his life, Patricia Boog. After various jobs in banks while he learned English and got his accounting degree, he began working for U.S. Treasury where he stayed for 35 years as a dedicated international auditor. It was there that he earned the nickname "Larry" from coworkers who could not pronounce his real name.
In 1980, he and his family moved to Alexandria, VA. There he was a soccer coach, school treasurer, and avid supporter of his children and grandchildren's schools and extra curricular activities. He never missed one of their athletic games or musical concerts and loved taking his family on bike rides around Clermont and canoe trips on Lake Accotink.
Larry will be remembered as someone who always had a friendly smile to give anyone he met. He would always go out of his way to make others feel at home. A service to celebrate his life will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church on Monday, October 26 at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Laureano's memory to the ALS Association, www.alsa.org.
