Obituary of Laurence J. Young Laurence J. Young of Annandale, VA passed away on October 7, 2018 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at the age of 82. Laurence was born in Jersey City, NJ on October 23, 1935. He was a graduate of St. Peter's Prep and St. Peter's University, where he majored in English, with minors in French, Latin and Philosophy. He joined the Army ROTC while in college and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after 22 years of service in the US Army. During his military career, he was stationed in France, Thailand, and Vietnam, and served at the Pentagon for three tours of duty. Before retiring, he was the Commander of the Armed Forces Courier Service (ARFCOS), co-operating from the Pentagon and the National Security Administration Headquarters located in Fort Meade, MD. The ARFCOS handled Armed Forces-related classified information for the White House and the State Department conveyed throughout the world. In his retirement, Larry wrote for a local newspaper; became an active member of the Scottish American Military Society; and President of Clan Mackintosh of North America. At a ceremony held at the National World War II Memorial on Veterans Day 2017, Larry was honored by the Quilt of Valor Foundation for his service to our country and was presented with a proclamation signed by former President Barack Obama commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Josephine and Frank Young; his sister Joan and her husband James Devaney; his brother Frank and his wife Dolores Young; and his loving godson Michael Scott McNerney. A devoted son, uncle, brother and friend, he will be deeply missed by his sister, Marjorie Lynam (nee Young); his brother-in-law Thomas Lynam; 16 nieces and nephews; 17 great nieces and nephews; 10 great-great nieces and nephews; and his many friends, especially Charles and Paula McNerney, and Doris Lewis. He will be laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. The funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
