

LaVerne I. Hill, 99, of Ft. Belvoir, went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 11, 2017. She was born on Aug. 1, 1917 in Chicago, IL to Oscar and Signa Gustafson. LaVerne is survived by her daughter, Marcia Hill Barnes (son-in-law C. Douglas Barnes), Spotsylvania, sister Vivian Zielin, Novi, MI, grandchildren Jessica Hall (Tim), Fayetteville, NC, Jonathan Barnes (Dana), Richmond, Juliana Custalow (Aaron), Spotsylvania, Joel Barnes (Fiorella), Pensacola, FL, Robert Hill (Kelly), Austin, TX, Matthew Hill (Tracy), Ellicott City, MD, 13 great grandchildren, 8 nieces, and 3 nephews. LaVerne was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Col. Benjamin I Hill, Army Ret., West Point Class of 1942, sons Jack R Hill, Douglas A Hill, and brother, Raymond Gustafson. LaVerne leaves a loving legacy for her family and friends. “LaLa”, as she was known to many, always shared a sweet smile with a warm hug. Her generosity, resiliency, and zest for life, resulted in her fruitful longevity. She was the “Best Mom and LaLa in the World!” Burial will be on Friday March 17, at 1:30 pm in Arlington National Cemetery. A Celebration of LaLa’s life will follow in the chapel at Demaine Funeral Home, Springfield. We will conclude with a reception in the auditorium at The Fairfax.
