

Captain Lee D.Harmony Jr USN (Ret.) age 89 of Springfield, VA passed away on Saturday December 31st 2022, in Fairfax, VA surrounded by family. Lee was born in New Bremen, OH and is preceded in death by his parents, Lee Donald and Freida Virginia Harmony of Dayton, OH. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sarah Herndon Harmony, and five children, Sarah Wills, Lee (Stephanie) Harmony, Mary Leigh (Vincent) Dewitte, Catherine Bolger and David (Amy) Harmony. He has 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Moore (Thomas Moore USNA 1955) of Cincinnati, OH.
Lee was a graduate of the Naval Academy Class of 1955. He went from the Naval Academy to serve on the USS Cony (DDE-508) before attending Submarine Training School and qualified in submarines aboard USS Blackfin (SB-322). Upon completion of the Submarine Nuclear Power Training Program he was assigned to the USS Seawolf (SSN-575), USS Tullibee (SSN-587). He reported to the USS Abraham Lincoln (SSBN-602) Blue as the commanding officer. Lee went on to work on the Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) and inspected many of the submarines in the Atlantic fleet.
Lee retired from a 31 year career with the Navy in June 1986. He went on to work in private business and retired in 1991. Lee was an avid runner and ran cross country at the Naval Academy and ran multiple marathons including the Marine Corp Marathon. He spent much of his retirement at his second home in Duck, NC with his family.
A funeral mass will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, January 27th at 3PM with visitation at 2PM at the church. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
